Gingerbread Playdough

The girls and I made Gingerbread Playdough last Sunday and let me just say, our house still smells delicious!  While mixing, I decided to also use these as "kid gifts" for Anna Claire and Ava's classes.

If you have a favorite homemade playdough recipe, you can use that and just add the seasonings to make the perfect gingerbread scent.

Here is my recipe, actually my mother's, but I'll claim it as my own now.

  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup of salt
  • 2 tsp. of cream of tartar (if you don't have this you can use 3 tbsp. of lemon juice)
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp Allspice
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 cup of water
  • I like to add 1 tsp of orange extract, but that's just me
  • Mix together dry ingredients in a medium saucepan.  Add in water and oil and stir over low/medium heat until it makes a firm "glob" of playdough.  I promise, you'll know when it's done.  It's play dough.  I then dump the saucepan of playdough on top parchment paper and knead until it is smooth.  Careful, it will be hot if done immediately after coming off the stove.

And then they also made super cute & easy class gifts.
